1978 Ronald L. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Arnold 3 Hastings Reservation 15 Oct Start watch from blind 0910. 1010, Finally, ♀ #290 Dark Blue-white (N)/Dark Blue appears, works acorn in Valley oak NW of granary. 1030 At least 3 birds around, second ♀ seen , probably (but not sure) Mauve/L Pink-Red. All flycatching, not at granary. 1035 2 ♂♂ seen at distance, flycatching together. Couldn't get bands. 1050 Finally confirm ♀ #207 Mauve/L Pink - Red. Chased (along with ♀ # 290) an unbanded (?) ♀ intruder. Intruder had very brownish primaries. Don't think it was banded, but not sure. 1100 added ♂ #120 L Pink-White/M and ♀ # 289 Metal/Orange, Orange D Blue/Orange. 1145 Almost nonstop flycatching. Nobody has visited the granary. For the last several minutes I've heard a lot of what I guess were chatter calls. Wasn't able to see the source. End 1155 Several Hundred acorns in granary. 24 Nov Start watch 1130. 3 birds seen flying away as I approached. Still a good many acorns in granary. 1145 ♀ Ad, perhaps # 207 Mauve/L Pink Red, from what I could see of bands. 1150 ♀ # 290 D Blue-white (N)/D Blue shows, eats acorn. 1255 Dulsville. 3 bird seen on far side of canyon.
