Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Arnold I Hastings Reservation 11 Sept 0940 watch starts . 0945 Unbanded ♀ at granary areas of Valley Oak, leaves 0950, Unbanded ♂ arrives 0951, extracts acorn from storage limb. 1025 banded bird finally shows, ♂ #199 Red/metal, Orange/white, extracts acorn from storage limb, eats 1040 ♂ intruder lands briefly in valley oak. wasn't able to read bands, but split light-dark, light-dark on one leg seen clearly. Came from south, then continued NE down hill. 1055 Unbanded ♀ mildly chased by ♂ #199. ♀ #422 also seen, Metal/Light Blue-Red. 1115 unidentified WP chases Nuthatch from granary areas. Nuthatch goes to another part of valley oak, then flies off at 1119. Returns at 1121, chased again at 1122. watch ends 1130. 14Oct 1530 Watching from Hide. One AW chased Scrub Jay from granary, then flew off. Little in the way of stores. Face flies incredibly thick. Could be a grimwatch. 1550 ♀ at granary, Quick look at left leg. Perhaps unbanded? 1610 ♀ Juv #47 Or-Lgreen/L green-orange. Definite ♀ plumage took half of acorn from ♂ 199 Orange (63)/white. I even saw the 63!! ♂ allowed juv. ♀ to take acorn half. #447 color was tough for me, but I'm pretty sure I got it right. Orange L Green combos on both legs. Certain ♀!!! 1655 Large flock of Western Bluebirds. 1700 ♀ #422 Black/L Blue-Red at granary tree, eating acorn at horizontal anvil. ±100 stored acorns. End watch 1745
