1978 Ronald L. Mumme 1 Group Notes Melanerpes formicivorus School Hill Hastings Reservation 13 Sept 0915 Started watch from blind. Only two birds prevalent, Ad. ♀86 Mauve/mauve, Light Pink/metal, and juv. 454 Black/white- Black. I didn't even get the impression that there might be other birds around. Little in the way of intruder or Scrub Jay chases. A few acorns seen in Valley Oaks, but not many. Two birds spent most of the time flycatching, although I did see one carrying an acorn toward the granary tree. Accipiter cooperi seen near end of watch 1145. 13 Oct Arrived 0800, seeing what appears to be L.Pink/metal ♀ #86 or main hawking perch of Valley Oak granary. In blind at 0820, only LPink/metal ♀#86 seen. Chases Scrub Jay at 0835, again at 0845, this one by flying from Hawking perch to tree at SW corner of enclosure. Then extracts old acorn (?) (sure looked old, 1 open cotyledon of Q.agrifolia) and eats. Pulled half of acorn from open stub in Valley Oak next (nest) to main flycatch tree. 0952, another Scrub Jay chase, to SW corner again. Sun-of-a-gun, 0905 an unbanded bird (♀ I think, out unsure), briefly landed in #86 tree, not chased (#86 seemed to give way almost, then continued on to the south. Bird looked very sleeked. 0925 Sorry gang, but maybe that bird was just an intruder, It flew to the south and kept on going. Sure looked like it owned the place for a moment, though. 0930 About 25 Cedar Waxwings flying around. Still only ♀ #86. This is getting dull. 1035 Things are definitely starting to suggest that #86♂ is by himself. I haven't heard a waka or a
