1978 Ronald L. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Westgate Hastings Reservation 23 Nov start watch 1213. Strange things here. One bird, perhaps a ♀, sitting in cavity of sycamore with head out. One ♂ seen, but left leg (yellow-red /) or (white-red/) or something similar didn't match with any Rd. I ♂♂. About 4 birds seen flying around. 1230. Bird in cavity definitely ♀. 1235. Now a ♂ in cavity (nest relief? I didn't see exchange. Weather cool, clear, shouldn't be a reason for cavity dwelling. 1245 Cavity vacated. Two additional ♂♂ seen, but left right leg (first read) also didn't match. White-dark Blue (N) /M and Metal/Black-Red Colors might be slightly different, but I was certain of pattern. 1310. Idiot! I just realized that I'm watching Westgate Birds. # 395 ♂ Black-White (N)/metal, and perhaps # 466 Metal/Black-Orange (1st year bird). Probably was since other leg I read as white/Black-Red (actually white/Black-Orange. Definite ♂. Also probably # 465 ♀ first year White/Orange (I read as white/Red). Seemed to be ♂, too, but was perhaps still in juvenile plumage. End for a while 1330. Start again 1400. All three definitely seen, but babies looking like ♂♂, not positive, ♂ # 395 pocked juv & 466 twice at granary. At least 4 birds around, one unknown ♀. End 1540. 24 Nov Passing by 1600, 4 birds (3 ad, 1 juv) on tip of sycamore. Thought I saw at least 1 ♀ among them. I'll take a look. No bands ♀ (#574?) at granary. End 1640
