1978 Ronald L. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Haystack - Blomquist Hastings Reservation 14 Sept 1650 start watch Many new green acorns in storage holes, Birds very active storing. Yellow-Black ♀ #176 and Orange-Black Orange-Metal ♂ #173 sees storing also White-D.Pink / Orange ♀ #247. Coopers' Hawks at 1708, Holy Bananas!!! I've been sitting next to a leg with Black/L.Green Bands, Must have been #451, Juvenile. Hawk kill, perhaps? Remains about 30 m SE of Telephone Pole nr. main granary, out in open ground. Feathers, leg is all. A quick guess of stored acorns about 300 t. Also seems to be storing in tree further west. Will investigate 1725. Perhaps I am mistaken. No can find stores in valley oaks west of granary. Source of acorns also uncertain, but definitely from down the hill to the northeast. Valley Oak probably, but could be Blue Oak Acorns. 1735 No other birds seen, but certainly there were at least four from this group flying around, perhaps even 5. 1745 Yaboo! ♂ Orange-Yellow/Red, Orange-Yellow Metal #171 seen. Three fledglings (not counting # Black- Light Green) only birds not seen. End extremely productive watch at 1750. 25 Nov Start watch 1230. Some acorns left in granary. 1305 2 ad ♀, #247 White-D Pink/orange and #176 Yellow/Black in granary tree, ♂ faint #173 also seen, drank sap from well of Valley Oak. End 1500
