Melanerpes formicivorus
1800 Hastings Reservation
14 Sept Arrived around 1420 to watch roosting in the hole where
Walt had set ambush earlier in the day. Two birds
came fairly early, still light enough to see that the
first bird in was ♂, second unknown. After both had
entered, one bird peered out of the hole for a few minutes
on two separate occasions.
15 Sept A successful ambush. The ♂ was christened #476 Black/
Light Green, Black/Light Green. ♀ in hole was #260
White/Dark Blue, White/Metal.
26 Nov ♂476
♂ Black/L. Green seen foraging in locusts around
barn, in Y territory, about 1000. Then seen to fly
SW down valley, toward 1600. Another AW was
seen in the same tree minutes earlier, before it too
flew toward 1600. Didn't see bands, but I suspect
♀ #260. One other AW seen briefly here, some
aggression. Don't know what the story is.
