R.L. Mumme 1978 Melanerpes formicivorus Group notes 1 Plaque Hastings Reservation 11 Sept 1530 watch starts 1545 Nothing yet. Birds had been extremely active this morning. Much chasing of Intruders (about 2-4) and Scrub Jays. Valley Oak by Upper Barn has many acorns, and seems to be big attraction. Also acorns, although probably fewer, in Valley Oak on eastern edge of corral, near barn. Spermophilus beecheyi seen in second tree (after acorn?). 1600 Scrub Jay harvests acorn in first Oak. no sign of AW. 1605 Golden Eagle! flies along crest of Buckeye Hill, chased by two Red-tailed Hawks 1620 Ad male in Valley Oak #1, couldn't see bands 1625 Intraspecific chase, intruder chased towards Red Hill. 1640 Wilson's Warber, 4 Lesser Goldfinches in Riparian growth next to upper barn and barn. 1720 Ad male LG/m and Ad female LB-W/Y (473+ 157) seen together in Plaque oak, waka called. Female ate acorn. Female with Red Right wing streamer 1735 Another chase up Buckeye Hill. Couldn't ID participants. 1739 Female 157 chases Scrub Jay 1800 Juv. 474 O-DB/M finally seen, being mildly chased around large Oak north of the Plaque oak. Both male + female seemed to chase the 1st year bird. Saw O/O on R leg. Eye quite white. 1810 Juv + male combine to chase jay. Juvenile later tolerated, 1815 end watch 13 Sept 1355 Start watch 1400 Accipiter cooperi soars by. All quiet. Ad male #473 L.Green/White seen at 1410. He harvests acorn, flies to large Valley Oak northeast of Plaque tree. Joined by female
