1978 Ronald L. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Non-Hastings notes 4 Nov Bolinas Ridge Trail, 1mle NW of Fairfax Bolinas Rd, Marin Co., California. Clear, mild weather. 1315 I happened along a group of Acorn Woodpeckers in a second-growth redwood area along the Bolinas Ridge. At least 4 birds seemed to be in the group, and three of them were briefly perched together at the dead tip of a Redwood (or Douglas Fir). The dead wood of the tip was a rather dilapidated granary, and another tree top nearby was similar. I saw no acorns in the granary, although Tanoak was abundant in the understory, and a fair number of Tanoak acorns could be found on the ground. I did see a few flycatching sortees. Couldn't see enough to sex the birds I saw.
