31 May -- GEORGIA, Rabun Co., (cont.) State Park. Today on Double knob heard distant drumming, Yellow-billed Cuckoo -- 3 heard or seen around Double Knob, 30 + 31 May, Barred Owl -- A pair was stationed very close to where I camped last night on the eastern slopes of double knob (30-31 May). They made the usual assortment of hoots, cackles, "sniffles", etc. At least two others also heard. Whip-poor-will -- At least two heard at dusk, 28 + 29 May Chimney Swift-- common in the valley, occasional around mountains Ruby-throated Hummingbird -- 1 30 May Pileated Woodpecker -- All woodpeckers seemed surprisingly scarce, but Pileated was the only one regularly heard (seen only twice). Downy Woodpecker -- 1 31 May Great Crested Flycatcher -- About 3-5 scattered individuals Acadian Flycatcher-- About 5 singing birds along Keener Creek, including one near cabin. Blue Jay-- Not many (maybe 10) seen in the 4 days Crow (common) -- Several seen or heard around mountains Carolina Chickadee-- Perhaps the most abundant passerine in the mountains. Tufted Titmouse -- Only a few (3-5), Catbird -- 1 near cabin Wood Thrush -- Uncommon in the mountains, 3 seen or heard Red-eyed Vireo -- Common in the leafier deciduous slopes (30-50) Solitary Vireo -- Tended to occur in the more mixed deciduous-pine areas, but less common than Red-eyed (maybe 5-10 seen)
