HASTINGS RESERVATION, Monterey Co.
10 Dec I arrived here about 1300. Pam + Walter had
gone up to the Arnold, so I walked out to
Chongo for a while and "caught a few Z's." Later
accompanied Walter on Yellow Pan Trap collections.
Ice in some of the yellow pans, plus the horse
trough, but afternoon was warm (70°F or so). I had
been about 22° F one morning earlier in the week,
according to Jim Griffin.
Some small shoots of green vegetation are appearing
here and there, apparently prompted by recent rain.
A Say's phoebe was hanging around the lab area and
about 1/2 mile up Red Hill.
11 Dec Watched some at Road 1 and did fairly well,
then helped Walt set an ambush at Blom I. 4 birds
roosted.
12 Dec Ambush failed. Walt, Jim Griffin and I visited
Chews Ridge in the A.M., and I saw my first
Pygmy Nuthatch in the Culter Pines there. Also
saw white-breasted and heard Red-breasted Nuthatch.
'77 fire has apparently created a bonanza for
bark gleaners, as we heard many Downy Woodpeckers.
I tried to watch at Buckeye in the P.M., but saw only
one unbanded ♀. After dinner Walter and I had a
really good discussion about potential aspects of AW
sociobiology that could be investigated.
13 Dec Found the watch I lost in Blomquist pasture the previous AM,
the left for Berkeley, arriving at 1300.
