HASTINGS RESERVATION, Monterey Co.
(12 Sept) a piece of fallen granary, for future new territory. Shelled acorns until dinner, then tried to watch roosting at Lambert, where Walt had set ambushes 11 Sept. We saw zilch.
13 Sept Watched at School Hill in the morning and a little at Plaque in the afternoon, with some acorn shelling in between. Walter + Pam made great Potato-Zucchini pancakes for supper. Watched roosting at 1800 (I saw two birds poorly), where we heard a couple of Pygmy Owls.
14 Sept Had a really fine day, despite the drudgery of vegetation sampling in the morning and acorn shelling in the afternoon. Saw my first Say's Phoebe around the labs, had a very successful watch at Haystack Blomquist (see group notes) and watched roosting again at 1800, where two birds roosted in the hole Walter had set an ambush for early in the afternoon. Perhaps we'll get lucky and bag an unlanded ♂ in the morning.
15 Sept Successful ambush completed (1800 notes) & left Hastings about 0900 and got in to Berkeley at 1215.
8 Oct Went over to see Jerre Stallcup and Stanford University, seeing numerous Acorn Woodpeckers at Stanford plus my first Heerman's Gulls along the coast west of Palo Alto.
12 Oct Left Berkeley at about 1500, Arriving at Hastings at 1830, just in time to help Walt fix his clutch pedal in his VW. After dinner, I settled down with Bio 1A Project Proposals. Ugh!
13 Oct A Basically unproductive day watch-wise (see School Hill +
