HASTINGS RESERVATION, Monterey Co.
10 Sept Arrived here around noon, leaving Berkeley about 800. Birded with Bob Zink about an hour before I left at the Berkeley Marina + Emeryville Flats area. Saw my first Surf Scoters (♂ + ♀) and Black Turnstone, plus 100+ Western Gulls, a few California Gulls, Short-billed Dowitchers, Least Sandpipers, Long-billed Curlew(1), Marbled Godwit (3).
After arrival, Walt + I went to Blackdecker, where we saw the two unbanded ♂♂ Acorn Woodpeckers hanging about. Later helped Walt with insect collections.
11 Sept About 0900 drove up to the Arnold, and I watched the Arnold I Group from hide, seeing two banded birds plus unbanded ♂ + ♀. On the way up saw a group of Mountain Quail at the gate. Walt said they had probably come down for water. About 20 Band-tailed Pigeons seen on the Arnold.
Acorn crop on Arnold, as everywhere on station, seems very poor.
Also watched at Plaque during the afternoon, Saw the three resident birds, a few unidentified intruders, plus Golden Eagle, prob. imm (white at base of tail) [illegible] flying along Buckeye Hill and harassed by two Red-tailed Hawks. ♂ Wilson's Warbler also seen.
At Blackdecker for roosting(or luck thereof), but did hear about six Great Horned Owls around the gate area.
12 Sept This morning Walt and I explored Poison Oak Hill, including a side trip to search for the elusive Cement Springs.
Heard Winter Wren and Steller's Jay around Robertson Creek.
In the afternoon we strolled up to Chongo and returned with
