26 May -- FLORIDA, Leon Co., and GEORGIA, Thomas Co., Tall Timbers Research Station and a surrounding areas -- Partly 0830-1430. cloudy, hot. Wilson Baker and Bobby Crawford took me to several Red-cockaded woodpecker colonies, including some in a virgin longleaf pine forest south of Thomasville, Georgia. Saw many roost and nest trees with the considerable amount of sap around the cavity. Wilson mentioned that there seemed to be very few ♀♀ Red-cockadeds around, which might have something to do with their recent decline within TTRS. Suggests possible sexual differences in dispersal, as in Scrub Jays, Acorn Woodpeckers. Wilson said about 50% of pairs have helpers. Also talked to Todd Engstrom, who is working with about 300 colonies of RCW in Appalachicola National Forest. RCW was a life bird, and also saw about five Yellow-breasted Chats. Other interesting birds were Orchard Oriole (1st yr. ♂), Blue Grosbeak (2), Indigo Bunting (15) Field Sparrow (2). 29 May -- GEORGIA, Rabun Co., Caldwell's property N. of Mountain City off Wolf Fork Rd. -- Arrived yesterday at 1600.
