May 29 Road from Palo N[illegible]o hydroelectric dam to La Floria, Zona Reinaquiche, Alustondo.
Spent all morning preparing specimens; rained hard in afternoon. Carlos, Ricardo +
I left for the Zona Reina and arrived late in the afternoon. It had rained
hard there & the road was in pretty bad shape. Arrived in La Floria at
about 19:45 and searched in transects in people's yards in Aldor al de Mayo
Necogus for 20-30 min. We got a Simylosa brunneina in a Morona tree + a
Liria didymata under a log. Drove back up towards Palo N[illegible]o after dark
& stopped at a small stream crossing the road at ~1100m elev, ca. 2-3km
from La Floria. Ricardo + I each got a hyloid motoroph on veg next to
the stream + Carlos got 2 Plectropyla hartwegi along a small stream above
the road. The road was slippery & rain threatened, so we drove to our
campsite at the high point on the road before searching again, 3 km N of the
hydroelectric dam. We searched in a forest that was mostly palm trees +
smaller deciduous trees from 20:25-21:30; got 9 B. cuchumata, 1 P.
hypnolytes, 3 Graugaster sucandini + 3 Graugaster sp. We walked along
the road & Ricardo saw a juvenile Nyctanthes pernis on the roadcut -
first record for Quiche. It was below that seemed like nice forest. On an
area of forest w/ lots of palms + some large trees above the road near here
we got 6 more B. cuchumata, 1 C. sucandi, 3 Graugaster sp. + 1 Andis.
We walked on to where we searched on our previous visit and searched until
12:30. Carlos + Ricardo got a jur. Retrichia auriga on a strand + an
Atropides mexicanus along a stream. I focused on big trees for
Nyctanthes (like I found them at Maxbal) but saw only a C. sucandi.
We walked back & camped near the high point on the road. Night was
clear & not too cold following rain of early afternoon. Forest is fabulous here -
more to find. Road is too new for people to have settled the area yet.
