Porto, Sean 2011 Journal May 22 Bethel, Montanas descent, NE of Gilan, Alta Verapaz, Guatemala (cont.) On the way down we saw 2 huge bromeliads of the kind w/ wide leaves that we usually open. Carlos opened one and got a B. helminchi. I opened the other which was near the top of a dead snag and fully exposed to the sun. I got a Cryptotitira with a golden brown tail and grey flecks on its sides that looks much like the single specimen we got at Finca Nican. Nestlets don't look too big for a Cryptotitira. We opened ~6 more good bromeliads but found nothing. Forest here consisted of large, tall trees + fairly shrubby understory w/ some twambs. It was getting late, so we headed back using the GPS to retrace our route, but ended up trying a pretty fine path that led us off our desired route. I spent a long time bushwhacking through thorny secondary growth before finally emerging into the forest where we had been earlier in the day. Found 3 Graugaster leocarti on the way down, plus at least 2 Graugaster that I couldn't catch. On a clearing w/ cut wood, Carlos got a small colubrid snake after dark. We emerged back out on the road at about 19:10, feeling exhausted and beat up. It seemed like it would rain until midday when a few drops fell, but otherwise it was hot (maybe 27° C) and cloudy all day. The night was dry so we didn't bother looking. May 25 Laj Chirel, Alta Verapaz, Guatemala We left Bethel on the morning of May 23 + drove to Uspanten. Judy, Jorge, Julio and Raiza left for Guatemala City.
