Ravito, Dear 2011 Journal 3/15 Mountain NE of Coban, Alta Verapaz, Guatemala Arrived in Guatemala City yesterday morning + met w/ collaborators at USAC. Drove to Coban + attempted to reach high forested area ~20km NE (by air) of Coban, near the village of Sacristal, but failed to get there before dark and returned to Coban for the night. This morning, we drove back to Sacristal, turned south (found DOR Extremadura) and turned W uphill until we reached the abandoned village of Bethel. The only remaining family explained that Mennonites from Caribca owned the area + gave land to people to farm, but the farmers cut down the forest and were thus expelled several years ago. The Mennonites (FUNDAMENO) still have a 90 ha forest reserve, which seems in decent condition. We hiked NE for a short distance but never reached good forest, although we could see it; walked through secondary forest + scrub. Carlos got a Bolitoglossa helminthorhyncha under rock near the village. We went a little NW from the houses, passing through good forest for ~100m, but again never reached the extensive good forest, which we could see across a gully. The cleared area appears to extend back from the houses, but this is still by far the largest forest in the region. We drove to Usopatan to spend the night. Mar 16 Usopatan and Jay Chimal, Quiché, Guatemala Spent morning meeting w/ people to set up collecting trip to Jay Chimal in May. Were given a frog Skelaporus by the CAFE people. Went to Jay Chimal + on to San Pablo El Bultio, where little forest remains. Returned to Chimal forest reserve + searched in roadbank from ~13:15-15:20; got 5 B. lincolni, 1 Skelaporus + 1 Andia. Weather was misty w/ light rain. Drove to Nebaj, found a DOR Centurio just before Guen.
