Oct. 23 Quirra de los Cuchumatanes, Guatemala
One of Nancy Nadelnberg's master students, Giles Ellison, and I
flew from SFO to Guatemala on Oct. 21. Bad flight - delayed,
then canceled, rerouted to Mexico City, delayed + almost missed
connecting flight. Met X Alviria Parra in MEX airport + spent night
in Guatemala City. Yesterday morning, met Carlos Vasquez at
MVSHVAT. Drove to Huehuetenango, and then on toward San Juan
cuchery. Took a turnoff down towards Rio Zuncil and spent night
in some really nice, medium canals in San Francisco los Flores.
looked for ~30 min for frogs en path to Rio Zuncil, but habitat
was terrible (mostly corn, no original or even secondary forest)
and river was raging. Lots of rain and fog; got 1 Chalus (saw 2 mire).
This morning, drove to San Juan cuchery and took road past
cemetery to Aldea Canchicu. Also no good forest here, but got
1 B. lincodii + 1 B. gaballa under rocks. Along road took, got
8 more B. lincodii under rocks over 2 Km (2 more spots). Most were
in a place w/ tons of rocks where they had either removed dirt + rock
or there had been a landslide long ago. Took surveys for microtime
work, then headed back towards junction nr road to Todos Santos
cuchumatanes. A few km N of junction met people from the municipality
+ drove 14.4km W to Puerto del Cielo. Beautiful, mossy fir forest
among the nicest clive seen here. Everything covered in thick carpet of
moss. Searched for ~10 min (6 people) -> got 10 P. mex. Took
microtime surveys, drove to Huehuetenango + stayed at Hotel del
Prado.
