Aug. 21 High point on road from Copilla to Tapalapa, Chiapas, Mexico.
We prepped specimens in the morning then drove to Tapalapa and on a road to Mazam looking for streams to walk at night. Found a few good mes and drove to Copilla to refill water. Stopped on the way back and opened log in pine-liquidamber forest for ~30min, found 1 Mesapin. Searched in roadbank at intersection w/ Octepee road for ~15min w/o success. Came back to camp, waited while it rained from ~19:00-21:00, then went out in light rain to streams on road from Tapalapa to Mazam from 21:15-00:45. At first stream, 2.5km from hwy, found 3 Electropsis ixil (heard more calling) + 6 Andris helaromithi sleeping on leaves. One stream went uphill while another formed a messy waterfall where I focused my attention. Rain slowed and eventually stopped, becoming misty. Hard to see first in the dark but it looked not so thick and seemed to be hard frost. At the second stream, 1.7km from hwy, there was a path that passed through forest w/ mossy walls. Baby + I focused on this while Jorge + Andrea looked in stream, where many P.ixil were calling. I found 3 Bolitoglossa occidentalis (?), a Graugaster, and A. helaromithi, and 2 P. ixil. Baby got a Graugaster + Oscar + Jorge got a P. ixil and an Andris. This area looked excellent for Cryptobranchus chiwarelletti based on its resemblance to the type locality in the nearby Selva Negra. Drove back to camp and ate. I searched around camp from 02:15-03:00 and found a Bolitoglossa hartwegi in the small forest patch behind my tent.
