Ejido Constitucion, Avenida Espinosa del Real, Chignas, Mexico (cont.)
Aug.14 ... I found a Crangastis ldei, as did Omar & Jorge. Continued my walk until 1:15m, where the forest ends and had clearly been burned in the past; really high grass w/ more forest visible on ridge. On the way down, they got another C. ldei and an Andris. Stopped searching at 15:30, back in camp at 16:30. I felt sick & laid down after a late lunch. Eventually went out to audit & found a Rhinella marina + a C. ldei. At 120:40, we started back toward ranch looking for frogs along road, streams, & in cattle ponds. In one pond I got 14 Rhabdinea cyanosticta and 3 Rana (of 2 species, I think), plus 3 R. marina and a C. ldei nearby (they got another C. ldei). Went up a stream that entered into what looked like good forest in the dark & walked until we got to a waterfall that had mossy walls and looked ideal for frogs; found only 2 sleeping / huge glassers. On the way down, got a tiny hybrid notembryg. It'd started to pour so we returned to camp, picking up 2 Dendrocera laurentii of the many we heard calling. After a late dinner, Jorge & Omar fixed a leak in their tent while I went out in a very heavy rain to the forest just across the paths from our tents, which is in good shape. Searched from 00:30-01:30 and got 3 B. profestors on leaves, a sleeping Andris, a C. ldei, and a beautiful adult Another spinosa on a leaf 1 m off the ground. Not sure if this species is known from the Chimalapas! Was completely soaked & it continued to rain hard, so I went to bed.
