Photos, June 2013 Journal June 11 Gray Mottin, Sierra de las Cuchumatanes, Dept. Huehuetenango, Guatemala When I woke up, Juvic told me that from where we climbed to yesterday, one can walk down 200m in elevation, then up again to 2900m elevation. The high point is another 2-3 hrs from where we were. He went off on the Canadians and we prepped specimens. Decided to try to get higher in elevation, but Juvic wasn't around to guide us. Started up at 12:30 reached high point at 13:50. Continued on a path downward, but once we were 300m down we realized it went much lower than we wanted to go. Climbed back up the steep hill. At the top I saw a tarpa (Eira barbara), it ran along the path toward me and got ~3m away before it saw me and bolted into the vegetation. It started to rain, rain lasted ~40min. We couldn't find another path + decided to return to camp, arriving around 17:00. It rained heavily for ~30min during dinner. Carlos, Jacobo, Juvic, + I went down to the small stream 5 min SE of camp and searched in vegetation for ~30 min for frogs. Heard 1 Phyllobates ixil call but found nothing. Walked on path towards La Ginolina and searched in secondary forest. I searched for ~45 min before returning to camp + found nothing; the others stayed out for 1.5 hrs + found a Bolitoglossa reflexus in vegetation. The night was clear + fairly warm. Woke up at 05:00 on June 13, hiked out and drove to Huehuetenango. Drove to Guatemala the next day and spent the night. Today, drove to Nolan Tecucalpa, after...
