Carriz Cruz Martin, Sierra de las Cuchumatanes, Huts - Huehuetenango, Guatemala (at)
June 9 ... hared guans. The forest higher up has some bambou, Clusia,
and a fair number of bromeliads on big broadleaf trees. Carlos said
it flattens out around 2200m. We came back to camp and prepped
specimens while it rained in the afternoon. Divic and Julio brought
us 3 more Cranaeteris . Stopped hiking around 6PM. I took
a nap after dinner and ended up just falling asleep. Carlos + Jacobo
walked back into the forest & searched from ~21:06 - 00:30. They
found 5 Cranaeteris (I think all the ones we've gotten are the
same species - C. chue ?) and 1 Blitoglossa cuchumatana.
June 10 Slept from 09:45 - 10:45 in a secondary forest below camp. Found
nothing; I think it's pretty isolated by cornfields + scrub vegetation to
have many hogs. Prepped specimens, then rested briefly. At 15:30,
started uphill toward high point of this area. I opened perhaps 10
bromeliads along the way & got a B. cuchumatana. Around 2200m,
the forest has some bambou and Clusia, and ca. 50m above that
bromeliads disappear (almost) and trees furs around. At the top (1900m),
the trees are huge and everything is covered in moss. We arrived around
18:00 and rested for ~30min. At 18:30, we started to look w/
lights, and it was completely dark by 19:00. We searched until 20:00 at the
top; Carlos got 2 B. cuchumatana while Jacobo + I saw nothing. There
is a sea of moss here; looks great for salamanders but hard to find. On
the way down, I got a B. cuchumatana and a B. mertwezi, both on
leaves. We arrived at camp at 21:45. It rained sporadically in the
afternoon but the night was clear and starry.
