Rants, Dear 2013 Journal (cont) San Francisco Petros-Montanas de Guiler Dept: Huehuetenango Guatemala June 5 ...Four were from the same pine tree and two from the same brameliad. Oh, total, we opened ~50 bromeliads but got most salamanders right at the beginning. Started to rain at 16:00 so we went back to camp, took photos, prepped specimens, + made dinner. At 21:15, walked out to sinkholes (jubuares) where we found three two nights ago. Found 1 more in one sinkhole and 9 in another, where Carlos Jacobo had collected 4 (only took 2 of the 9). Several salamanders were well inside part of the sinkhole that formed a cave. Only took a few so as not to harm population. Walked back towards camp in a mist and searched for ~30 min in a nice, mossy forest w/ big trees but saw nothing. Got back to camp at 22:45. Weather was cool today, high around 22°C. Yesterday, we left Barillas with Luis and [illegible] driver from FUNDAECO, plus two Andreensis botany students. Drove 5 from Barillas to the Rio Juisel below the village of , where the road ends. At 7 miles to carry our stuff up to the small community of La Grinding, where FUNDAECO has a house. We had dropped off Jorge Swain Lopez + Susie in Huehuetenango and picked up Rodolfo Luna + Andrea. It was a steep, rather difficult hike up; I did it in 1.5 hrs, some people took up to 3. Started at 500m and went up to 1200m in the sun.
