Neban Fecandurrs, Repts, Santa Rosa, Guatemala (cont.)
...We started hiking up the eastern peak which we were told has the best forest. First went through coffee w/ pine trees, then a forest of deciduous trees with lots of weedy undergrowth (typical disturbed dry forest) and finally got to some oak forest w/ a few bromeliads and less weedy undergrowth around 1750m elas. cl opened 2 bromeliads from a small tree and the second one had two Bletialess in it. They were both small (<40mm SVI), brown w/ some dorsal spots, and had short, stout tails. They look like Campbell's shots of B. kagelkollumy, which is on Neban Pacaya. Feet are partially webbed, dark w/ white speckling. We opened 26 bromeliads and got 11 Bletialess total and 1 Pterocaulis euthysanta. Bromeliads ranged from completely dry to having some water; rest of forest was very dry, even under logs. cl hiked to the summit, which has somewhat denser oak forest w/ a few pines and fewer bromeliads. We hiked back down since we didn't want to cut down too many bromeliads. Started hiking up around 11:00, searched from 11:50-13:00, and got back down around 13:45. Drive to the coastal highway after photographing animals, then drove up to Mayuta. At there a little late to start up the volcano as we spent the night; cl felt sick, and vomited twice after finishing with specimen preparation. Think twice before ordering a richado de frutas in Chigimulite.
