Roots, Dec 2012 Journal Dec. 13 Jolos Santos Cuchumatanes, Depto. Huehuetenango, Guatemala. We stopped by the municipalidad and got a man named Arnoldo Domingo Pablo, who works for CONAL, to go to Villa Alicia with us. We think this is where Manuel Clareder found a Dendrobium. Drove 13.2 km from Jolos Santos Cuchumatanes to a stream. Walked up the stream for ~50m, then took a steep path uphill through some secondary forest. Ended up climbing an extremely steep slope; nearly vertical in parts, and I got hit by two falling rocks. Finally made it to an area with some tiny oak trees and a few bromeliads where we searched for 45min - 1 hr, ending around 13:00. On the way up, I found 2 Plectranthus that look like small Liriope to me; both were out on the path and were probably stirred up by Carlos & Arnoldo walking by. Carlos and I each found 1 more in bromeliads, and I got a tiny Plectranthus. There weren't many bromeliads; we found 15-26. Arrived at a flat area w/ lots of logs that looked good, but Arnoldo needed to get back to the muni so we left; spent much more time walking to the site than we did searching. Found a much better path down, drove back to Jolos Santos, and continued on to Guatemala City where we slept at Carlos's house. Dec. 14 Volcán Tecuamburro, Depto. Santa Rosa, Guatemala. Drove from Guatemala City to Cuilapa; took road to Chiquimulilla, turned off towards Chacao, and then drove on to Finca Linda Vista Tecuamburro. Apparently, the entire volcano is private land on coffee farms, but we talked to the owner's daughter and she gave us permission to hike up. Left the truck in a field next to what looks like an old thermal area; some water flowing across it into a pool and tons of sulfur + white rocks.
