La Peña Nevada area, Nuevo Leon, Mexico (cont)
Oct. 9 ... from 4-7 hours to get to Dales Nombres, and it was late so we decided not to go; also not convinced the truck would make it.
We drove N through desert, which gradually changed to grassland
and open oak woodland. Stopped just N of Puerto Cerquillos and
searched under logs in dead agaves from ~17:45-18:36. Tons
of agave amongst oak trees; habitat was pretty dry, even under some
logs. Marlene got a P. galapago in the center of a dead agave and
Pete got another under a log. This ranks among the strangest
salamaner habitat I've seen; seems inhospitable for amphibians.
Drove to Abana to spend the night at Hotel Juana Maria-pretty nice.
The day was sunny/warm, as was the evening.
Cerro Potosi, Malacena, Nuevo Leon, Mexico
Oct. 10 Woke up late (fixed animals until 02:00) and drove NW out of town
up Cerro Potosi. Stopped in what looked like good P. galapago habitat
tested on what I've seen so far, at 2900m elev. Very open pine
woodland; vigilante told us that many trees (all in same area) have
been cut down w/c of pine bark beetle. We searched from 11:00-
11:45, and collected 26 C. prisens (saw at least 10 more) and
a Platydor. One Chiro was under a rock; all others under logs.
These salamanders are longer + more robust w/ shorter tails compared
to those from yesterday; those from Pena Nevada are clearly not
C. prisensis. Went up to ~ mixed pine- fir forest at ~3050m elev.
and searched for 5 min; saw 2 C. prisens. Drove to a point 24.3km
from Malacena at 2550m elev. and searched for 15-20min
