Ronto, Deer 2012 Journal Oct. 9 La Peña Nevada area, Nuevo Leon, Mexico Drove into Nuevo Leon through Chihuahuan desert and went N from la Bolsa on road to Zaragoza. Started to climb in elevation and oak trees appeared after juniper woodland. Stopped at a point 22.6km from la Bolsa where a dry streambed crossed the road. There was an open oak forest w/ lots of agave on the slope above the road, and we searched under logs, rocks, & in dead agave from 10:50- 11:40. Mariana quickly found 5 Chirostriata under a log. They are a little more robust than the C. multidentatus that we've been getting and look like photos cl've seen of C. prisius. We went on to collect 16 more and left 9-10 juveniles that were too small to collect. Mariana also got 2 Themasphus in an agave. This habitat seems rather dry and somewhat marginal for salamanders. Continued on towards la Encantada; road got rather rough in some parts. Started to see more pine trees + grassy areas. Stopped in a mixed pine-oak forest 1.8km S of la Encantada and searched under logs for ~30-40min. Got 10more C. prisius, 1 microscopic P. galensae, and a Plestiodon all under logs. The habitat here was a bit more humid than at the first site. We continued on to a site 2.4km N of la Encantada, which had a lot of rocks next to the road. Found 25+ Chirips in ~5min; I would guess there was one under almost every rock. The forest here is much more humid and is a mix of pine, oak, and fir. Continued on to Zaragoza, passing through nice fir forest, pine forest, and finally back into arid habitat. Asked around in Zaragoza for the road to Duques Montes, a Chirips locality. Apparently, the road is pretty bad, and estimates varied
