Ciudad del Maiz, S.L.P., Cueva El Pacho and Acahualtes, Tamaulipas,
Mexico (cont.)
Oct. 7 ... that should be here. Drive to Ciudad Mante for food, then on
to Ocampo. Wanted to visit a cave 22km N of Ocampo at
Quebraderos El Paraiso, but the road is apparently terrible &
impossible w/o 4WD. Even with 4WD, we were told it was very
hard and could only find 1 guy who would take us; he wanted
1400 pesos, which was too much for me to pay. We drove on
toward Julia and stopped in a picnic area with a shrine to La Virgen
Milagrosa, part of Ejido Acahualtes, 22km from the center of Julia.
The habitat was oak forest w/ fairly big oaks w/ spanish moss &
quite a few bromeliads. The understory was a nearly impenetrable
mix of vines, herbaceous plants, poison oak, thorny shrubs, and
"mala mujer," with irritating hairs on it. I got stung by the
mala mujer on my left arm, which promptly swelled to 150% its
normal size. Rafa & Mariana both found a Pseudobryceca scandens,
one under a fallen bromeliad & one in a small bromeliad. I got a small
coloptera under a rock in the picnic area. Saw a big flock of green
parrots take off down the road; lots of bird life in general.
We drove to Julia to spend the night in the Hotel Rosara,
which was decent.
Acahualtes and Mizihuana area, Tamaulipas, Mexico
Oct. 8 Drive truck to Acahualtes this morning & searched on other side of
road from 10:00-11:40. Looked under lots of logs but found nothing.
I got a tiny Eleutherodactylus out on a rock. Opened about 25
