Coeur d'Alene, Idaho: Mt. Washington, Chepauk, Mexico (cont.)
June 17 ... looks different every time I see it; in color pattern as well as in some way I can't quite put my finger on. Seems like it might contain several different species. We walked down through a forest of very large pine trees w/ big Isomelos and somewhat of an understory, searching in really good logs but finding nothing. This forest looks either spriny or at least really old; best habitat I've seen here so far. Arrived at an area of mixed pine & oak before turning back at 18:45. It had stopped raining around 15:30 and was clear by about 17:00, offering 360° views including a view of the Pacific.
We searched along the road after dinner from 21:45 - 23:30. Much of the roadside wasn't good for salamanders (no rocks or holes, just a dirt slope) but I got a large, brightly colored B.f. migratorius in one of the four good areas about 0.5km from camp. Some of the roadside had already dried out from the afternoon rain. The night was clear and cool.
June 18 Took photos in morning. Walked down road ~200m, then downhill into the nice pine forest where we had been yesterday. Opened up 30 logs from 10:30 - 12:20 but found nothing; decided they had too much water for salamanders so we shouldn't destroy more. Ate lunch, then started searching near camp in & under logs at 14:00. Got 2 small B. franklini migratorius under logs and a third under a fallen, decaying tree trunk. It had rained from 12:00 - 13:00 but was raining only lightly by this time. We continued downhill and met up with the road as it started to rain harder. Walked down to a small road that goes off to the W and searched along it until 16:30 w/o finding anything. Walked a little further, then turned back for camp. Found a Mesaspis modelotus under a rock 200-300m from camp.
