Roots, Sea 2012 Journal San Francisco Jimal, Mpio. Jila, Chiapas, Mexico June 14, 3 On June 11, Jorge and I got all the herb equipment ready. Met up w/ Erick Harau Trejo, Claudia Antuaya, Orellana, and Daniel Mendez Aranda from Adolfo Navarro's lab in the Facultad de Ciencias, UNAM. They will be with us to collect birds. Drove to airport + picked up Zach Hanna, Ben Intait, + Amina Boujidi and drove to Fortin de los Flores to spend night. Around 01:30, my room was invaded by soldiers w/ large automatic weapons who forced us to stand against the wall while they searched the room - rather scary + clearly illegal. Woke up, brought supplies + tried to make it to field site; took too long on road and only made it to Jila to spend the night. Got an Alphaprep gate and a DOR lamp project, triangulated on dirt road b/w Melchor Ocampo & El Chinal, before arriving at Salto del Agua - Jila highway. Woke up today + drove to Alvaro Obregon; talked to Anastasia Lopez who gave us permission to work at site. Drove on to end of road at Nemesario Carranza and spent ~15hr packing down equipment to have essentials. Hired 4 people to carry 4 logs + water, uphill for almost 2 hours to the small settlement of San Francisco Jimal, composed of 6 families. Talked briefly w/ some men, who agreed to let us work + stay in a small meeting room. Rained torrentially as hail for ~45 min around 17:00. After dinner, Jorge, Amina, & I searched for ~45 min - 1 hr along paths near the village but saw nothing. Found 2 Anolis cyaneus in manmade wells or large holes filled w/ water. Was surprised not to see any Graeagater (or something else, for that matter). Night was fairly cool and clear.
