Comunidad Agrícola La Concha and Finca San Jerónimo Miramar, Apto.
Architeguén, Anatemala.
Jan. 20 Took photos in the morning; then drove nearly to Patulul and then across the Madre Nieja River to San Juan Bautista and north to Comunidad Agrícola La Concha, a small town surrounded by shade-grown coffee.
We drove just out of town and searched from 14:00-15:30 in a cafetal. There were lots of red bananas but all I got in them was an Oedis diffusians and a Beithrodontys gracilis; Carlos & I each got an Ameiva and a male Oedis serrana; I got 2 Sphenomorphus larvatus in leaf litter, and Carlos got a Graugaster purinias and 2 Lapidophyma flarimaculatum under rotten logs. Although B. occidentalis is reported from Volcan Atitlán in literature, I'm beginning to suspect that it doesn't live here; I opened enough red bananas that I should have found one, unless it is very rare there at the edge of its range.
Drove back, prepared specimens & ate dinner. Fred was tired again but Carlos & I went back to the same stream as last night & searched from 20:55-21:45. We focused mostly on the upstream canyon area. Saw lots of C. loki x C. reginias, and Phana maculata. Collected 4 more Pthyodrya euthysanta and saw ~5 more; Carlos also got our first Amphisbaena brandinii of the trip. On an area of the canyon w/ very high, steep walls, we Carlos spotted a small margay, which we chased along the stream. It ran slowly and we got within ~2-3m of it, which was very surprising. Was also surprised to see it in an area dominated by intensive agriculture. Again, looked like it would rain all day, but only got misty, higher up where bird nets were.
Nighttime temp was ~22-25°C. We prepared specimens until late.
