Finca San Jerónimo Miramar, S slope of Volcán Atitlán, Depto. Suchitepéquez,
Guatemala
Jan. 18 At another fairly late start, since we have to wait for the mammalogists
to return w/ a truck before we can leave. Plan for the day was to seek out
red bananas to get additional species of salamanders. First, Ted and I took us to “Clan”, an area where the finca workers grow bananas and pacaya.
It had a small stream running through a canyon w/ lots of pacaya and
green bananas. Only saw about 4 red bananas, 2 of which had
B. engelhardti in them; cl got 2 Graingerator lelei on the ground +
saw a few more; searched for ~30 min. Ted then took us to 2
other spots lower down w/ green bananas; neither was good. I got another
C. lelei at the second + Carlos saw a big Graengstor that jumped into the
stream. Left Ted and I; drove to Patulal looking for red banana plants
(saw more), + took myself to Pochuta. Stopped in a cafetal 7.9k from
Pochuta and searched for ~45 min in mostly green bananas. Carlos got
a Sutor melambatus in one of the four red bananas and we got 40
C. lelei; cl saw 2 Aphanomorphus that escaped. We drove back, prepped
specimens, + had dinner. Ted was tired and went to bed; Carlos and
I drive back to our first collecting spot of the day and started
searching at 20:50. We saw hundreds of C. lelei (mostly, smallish) -
collected 10 bigger ones. Also got a C. stuarti along stream. Walked
slowly up small stream and got 6 Plethodhyla matudai from
vegetation above a near stream + saw 1 more. Also found 8 Andis (no
male adults, collected 7) sleeping on vegetation. Carlos found 2 Batrachus
lincolni on leaves, 1 near stream + 1 away, plus an Ambastodes away from the
stream. Stopped searching at 22:50. Day had been cool + cloudy (low 30°s)
and night was clear (and slightly cool), maybe 23°C.
