Roito, Dean 2011 Journal Volcán Suchitán, Depto. Jutiapa, Guatemala Aug. 23 Drive to Guatemala City on the 20th, went to Antigua on the 21st. Spent the 22nd sorting specimens and making export permit lists, then drove w/ Sergio Perez, Jim Patton, Kevin Beare, Rodolfo Duran, Dan Wait, Olga Sanchez, Maria Fernanda Asturias, Jose Alejandro Nussle Paul, and Ricardo Portillo to Santa Catarina Mita, Jutiapa + spent night at Hotel Las Tres. On the morning we met Claudia Ortiz, Paig, who works for an NGO ( ) that manages the forest on Volcan Suchitan. Drive to Florencia, then to [illegible] Quatrachs, where we started walking uphill and got mules to carry our stuff. Started a little before 09:00 + arrived at 12:00, taking lots of rest/ photo breaks on the way up. Great views of Volcan Apulo, El Jefeño and other peaks on way up. Passed through remnant oak forest, corn fields, and finally scrubby secondary forest w/ tiny bromeliads before reaching a spring (very little water, which was muddy) and a big field just planted w/ pine trees where we set up camp. Ricardo and I went out into the forest on the trail to "La Piedra", one of the peaks of the volcano. Started in secondary forest, then got to somewhat disturbed cloud forest w/ lots of huge bromeliads. Our bromeliad cutter hadn't arrived yet, so we searched in a few reachable bromeliads + under some fallen ones. I got a Bolitoglossa suchitanensis under a big fallen bromeliad. It looks vaguely like a B. morio ; grey with some flecks of lighter color, mostly unwebbed feet. Continued up trail to some really nice cloud forest along a ridge. Old trees, tons of bromeliads, tree ferns, and moss covering everything. Clearly lots of cloud water input. After about 90 min of searching (since we started - ~15:00-16:30), it began to rain and we had to head back to camp. Saw an Anolis in a grassy field along path. Felt sick + slept until dinner. It only rained for ~20 min, then became cool + misty.
