Finca Firmeza, Reserva Biologica de Cofre Perla, Dept. Chiquimula, Guatemala
Aug. 18
Spent the morning prepping specimens. Strolled along a path near finca house from 16:30 - (17:30) but saw only a Sphenomorphus plus a pair of woodpeckers (Colaptes auratus) in a tree. Also saw some brown-hooded parrots, as on other days here. In the early afternoon, Monica from FUNDAECO came and made me do a short, live interview on a Morales radio station via cell phone as part of a PR campaign to promote the reserve. After that, a newspaper reporter from La Prensa Libre came to interview and photograph us, in order to write a story as part of said PR campaign. We then talked about several potential peaks above 1200m in the Cofre Perla to visit to try to find Cryptophis macki. Apparently, Cerro Negro Norte is only a couple hours walk from here, but we would have to cross Mario Ponce's (a local narcos) property, and he doesn't allow foreigners to do it. FUNDAECO is trying to get along w/ him so we don't want to do anything to risk ruining their work. Around 17:45, a very heavy downpour quickly dumped a lot of rain and then moved on. After dinner, Carlos, Ricardo, Odalis, & I walked up to the high ridge at 20:00, arriving at 21:00. Conditions were fairly wet and perfect ideal for amphibians, although I felt like I saw fewer Craugastor than before. Searched from 21:00 - 23:45. I found only an A. cardosa; Odalis got a Bufo campbelli, an Andis uniformis, and a Bryophyge; Carlos got 4 Bryophages, an A. cenchoa, and a Cryptophanes cristatus, as well as a tiny Boeffleri. On the way down, they got a [illegible] calling from a small branch ~1.5m off the ground, and saw an Olingo (Bassaricyon gabbii) in a tree. I saw another on my way down - could tell it wasn't a kinkajou by the bushy tail after consulting field guide. We are at its extreme northern range limit and it has only recently been reported from the
