Porto, Sean 2011 Journal Aug. 10 Estancia Biologica Chandler Ristling, Cerro San Hil, Depto. Chyabal, Guatemala. We spent the morning photographing + preparing specimens. After lunch, we walked uphill past the stream with the waterfall + searched in logs and leaf litter on the path from ~ 14:30-16:30. There were tons of pratt logs in the area but I found nothing. Gabriela got a juvenile Ptychoglossus in a leaf axil, and Carlos got an Anolis capito on a log. After dinner, I went out alone and searched along the stream that leads to the Rio Caribowies. On the way down to the stream, near the field station, I got 3 Craugastor laticeps. Along the stream, I got a Bolitoglossa rufescens on a leaf next to the stream and an Aniligus boudinii on vegetation over the stream, both near the edge of the forest. Walked back through the river to the path from the road up to the station. Did a dawn walkout in regenerating vegetation above the river, then saw nothing more. All told, searched about 20:50-22:30. Weather today was hot and dry, clouding over in the evening. Rained as I was falling asleep, 1/8/br at 01:00-01:00. Aug. 11 Cerro San Hil, Depto. Chyabal, Guatemala After breakfast, Carlos and I went with a guide, Antonio, to reach the high point of Cerro San Hil (1275m). We drove to a cattle ranch 2-3 km past the turnoff to the field station on the road from Los Angeles, down to the Rio Caribowies and parked at the river. Started hiking at 08:30; first part uphill was steep + in full sun. On the way up, we got into an area w/ some decent looking forest and Carlos caught a Microcynus diastema on the path. We continued through forest patches and grassy areas to a cluster of houses known as Sanpino (was inhabited by only 1 family) arround 1000m eler. Continued uphill on a rougher trail that got into
