Ronto, Dean 2011 Journal June 6 2.1 Km NW (high rd) of Chiantzatz on road to Pasaje Quiche, Guatemala Trapped specimens this morning, then went up to forest after Nicole returned from checking mammal traps. On the way up, Jerome + I saw a jaguarundi cross the road; Rodolfo told me he saw it in the forest chasing a small mammal (rodent). I started searching at 11:00 and decided to focus on Bromeliad sampling. I worked until [illegible] 13:00, then again from 14:00-17:30, and opened a total of 45 bromeliads. Most were very large w/ lots of water, and I worked primarily in an area of large oak trees w/ many bromeliads and a sparse understory; I think people have removed the smaller trees for firewood. On total, I got 13 B. cucheranata (kept 7). I also opened a few logs at the beginning of the day + got 3 B. minor, 1 in + 1 under a log. The third B. minor either came from a bromeliad or was in the leaf litter where I was opening the bromeliads; I not sure which. I was a little surprised not to see any other herps, but perhaps the bromeliads just have too much water. Day was cool + cloudy w/ no rain so I didn't search at night. June 7 Prepped specimens in morning. Opened 20 bromeliads in disturbed/secondary oak forest from 10:15-12:00; found no herps but took bromeliad insect sample in 95% EtOH. Jerome + Rodolfo collected a ? Anolis at their bird trapping site, saw another. I saw 2 Ateles sp but caught neither. Walked N through secondary forest but found no good areas to search- few logs or bromeliads. After a long lunch (14:00) walked SE into pine/oak forest + searched until 16:15. Found 2 B. minor + 1 B. cucheranata under logs and another B. cucheranata under trunk of cut wooden plank. Opened 15 bromeliads + got 4 B. cucheranata. Started to rain lightly around 15:30, then hard at 16:30. Went back to Chiantzatz w/ Jerome's records after they pulled the mist nets.
