Aug.31 Volcan Mombocho, Dept. Granada, Nicaragua
Spent morning at MARENA arranging export permit, then drove to Volcan Mombocho. Road climbs from dry forest through coffee to a beautiful cloud forest with lots of epiphytes and short trees.
Stayed at visitors center/field station and waited until dark.
Lucky found 6 Bolitoglossa mombochensis on Heliconia around station in about 10 min; collected 1. After dinner (ca. 20:00)
started walking down road. Salamanders were abundant on the
higher part of the road, and we continued to see them until
we passed palm eler, Volcan which we saw once. Color pattern very
variable, from almost uniform brown to striped, with several
specimens very light in color. Found 2 specimens with reddish
(SMR852) or orange (SMR851) spots on a light background. Most
have some B. striatula-like lines on center, but not nearly as
pronounced, and lack (or nearly lack) them on limbs. Found
4 Ambliscea brandtii, 2 Hendrapsis microcephalus, 1 Craugastor
litjini, 2 Bufo ceciliae, 5 Andes cupreus and about 10
Andes liporaeus (collected 5). Searched down to about 840m,
then started back up, arriving at station around midnight.
Sept.1 Drove down to Finca las Flores, where someone took a photo
of a black Bolitoglossa ambra-like salamander. Finca is lower
cloud forest. Started searching in cafetal around 09:30, then
walked up road, stopping at 16:00m. Searched under logs, in leaf
litter, in a few bananas + cut down a few bromeliads but found
nothing. 2 guides from MARENA came with us and searched:
