nito, Jean 2009 Journal Aug. 25 El Rama, R.A.A.S., Nicaragua Yesterday, woke up and hiked down Volcan Maderas. Ferry to San Jorge Broke, and we took another, arriving in Masagua to prep specimens. Visited MARENA in morning, then drove east to town of El Rama, end of the paved road to the Atlantic coast. Wanted to get to Kukra Hill, but road was in very bad shape, so we stayed at the Ecohotel El Nivero just east of El Rama. Arrived at dark to hear Leptodactylus melanotus, Eixans stauferi, Agalychnis callidryas and Dipsas diastema in the hotel garden; caught a few. Drove west out of town for about 13km and heard D. muricophalus, Smilisca baudinii, S. phaesta, Bufo wallacei and above-mentioned frogs in ditches along road. Collected several B. wallacei and S. stauferi in a ditch along the road, where I saw a Micrurus that escaped by burrowing in bottom of muddy grassy pool. Also collected a Puma fervor and a Filochrophylus venulosus on road in light rain. It had rained all day, creating good conditions for searching. Found a DO R Phricureus eurypotilus that had just been killed, and saw a small long-tailed Boa constrictor on road. Searched for ~1hr including stop at pond. Returned to hotel. Javier, derin and I searched in grassy Strelitzia arbores plantation behind hotel, where large female Bolitoglossa striatula was on a branch of a fallen tree in the middle of grass. Our first Teuca salamander! I searched for ~30min before going back; habitat seemed bad, w/ no natural vegetation in sight. Javier + derin saw a Basiliscus and caught several anoles (A. limiflorus + A. lemurinus) as well as a Lonotodes alligatoris.
