Oct. 25 San Bernardo, Mpio. Santiago Comaltepec, Sierra de Juarez, Oaxaca, Mexico.
Yesterday, we drove to Oaxaca to take care of a hotel reservation for the Dia de los Muertos, then drove to Santiago Comaltepec. Got a DOR (Doa or MX135 in arid habitat). Talked with Comisario de Bienes Comunales in Comaltepec + San Pedro Yxox - no problem w/ permission. Slept in Yxox.
Today, we drove to San Bernardo, an ecotourism trail where we got a Therios arboreus in March of this year. Started searching around 10:30; Dana found a juvenile Othospidea under a log. We searched in bromeliads (which were abundant) + some logs until 15:00. We found 7 Choropteris "plurialis" and a Plectrhyza (arboreascens?) in Bromeliads, and a Graugaster mexicanus in leaf litter. While looking for a juvenile Chirop that escaped in the leaf litter, I pulled up some matted leaves and found an adult Pseudowyea c. werleri in the dirt. It looks a lot like a P. ophelia to me (dark grey/black robust, white spots on tail) although the feet are different. It seemed very lethargic when I found it. We walked all the way down to 1580m. Around 1500m, the forest started to seem drier, and large, spiny bromeliads (Aechmea) appeared. After lunch and a few photos of the pond, we searched on the other side of the road in a nice forest w/ many bromeliads from 16:30-17:45. Found 2 adult + 9 juvenile C."plurialis", kept only the 2 adults. Ate in La Esperanza and talked w/ the agent, then went back to San Bernardo and looked at a wet stretch of road bank for ~15 min. Got 2 Graugaster of the albodi group, and saw a tiny C. mexicanus. I spent the night in Yxox after prepping specimens. The day was warm and sunny, and the night was clear.
