Ravito, Dear 2010 Journal Sept. 29 Mazatlan area, Ahuero, Mexico (cant) ... on Andis or a bus. We left and drove down, realizing we had a flat tire right before we reached the highway. Changed it, at a late dinner stayed at the Hotel Marina Real in Culiacango. Oct. 16 Sierra de Alvarez, San Luis Potosi, Mexico Yesterday, left of around 12:30 and drove to San Luis de la Paz, Guanajuato, then on road to Xichu. Starting in desert-like conditions, the road climbs steadily and the vegetation changes to fairly extensive oak forest. I searched both in road banks and some excellent logs near the settlement of Charea Azul, 37 Km (by rd) from Canada de Morelos (21.31849 N, 100.11594 W [+10m], 2297m elev) from 18:00-19:15, then on a nice roadbank along a dirt road from 19:45-21:00 but saw nothing. The habitat here looks very much like the oak forest at San Joaquin, Durango. Drove to Adolfo Hidalgo and stayed at the Casa Mia hotel near the playa - nice + cheap. Today, shopped for ceramic tiles after breakfast, then drove to the Sierra de Alvarez, San Luis Potosi. After asking around in the village of San Francisco I drove on to the village of Km 68 and paid 20 pesos MN150 to take me to 2 caves above town. Boths were in oak forest with fairly big trees, agaves, and cacti. The first cave was a large passageway that went back perhaps 50-60m, with several big chambers; it was somewhat dry but had soggy areas, lots, and abundant invertebrate life; seemed good for salamanders (GPS: 22.01528 N, 100.60614 W [+6m], 2458m elev). The second cave was little more than a big crack, didn't go back very far, and had a thriving fly population (GPS: 22.01828 N, 100.60516 W [+8m], 2355m elev).
