Mazatlan area, Guerrero, Mexico
Sept.29
We woke up somewhat late after a long night and I decided we didn't have
time to go search for Bolitoglossa helmsi. Instead, drove on free
highway from Oepanles to Chilpancingo. Stopped at a private property
called Aguas de Obispo, 17 Km S of Mazatlan. It is the type locality
of a species of Atyrhopus, and a very low elevation site for P. helleri. After
seeing the habitat, fairly dry, open pine forest with nice rock
walls, it seems more likely to me that the salamander here is
either Pleurodyscea maximus or something like it. We searched in piles
of roof tiles next to a building and I found 2 Atyrhopus; we
also saw several small Craugastor. One Atyrhopus escaped. We
searched for ~40 min total. We had lunch in Mazatlan and then took a
small road W out of town, under the toll road and up into the mountains.
We quickly got into an area with pine trees, saw palms and agave,
and searched at the type locality of another Atyrhopus, 6.6 Km
by road from Mazatlan. We quickly found 2, 1 under a rock and
one amongst fallen agave leaves, and I'm got a Craugastor augusti
juvenile. We continued uphill to Tejocote and then on to the
end of the road, 13.2 Km SEan Mazatlan. Found a Conopsis under a
board along road, then a Sceloporus, 1 Craugastor, + 1 Thanophis
as we walked from the car through a field with lots of logs toward
a waterfall. The waterfall was rather large and was in a
broadleaf and pine forest. We arrived at nightfall; searched from
19:45-20:45. Tom found 2 Eleutherodactylus guentheri about 1.5-2m off
ground in vegetation above a small stream that flowed into the main
stream. Both frogs were fairly small. These are the first we have
seen and the first collected in years, as far as I know. I got
also found a strange
