notes, dear 2010 Journal Sept. 27 Cerro Jastepac, E of Puerto del Alfo, Axtverra, Mexico Spent morning prepping specimens. After lunch, drove up towards Cerro Jastepac. Stopped on a slope 8.0 km by rd from Puerto del Alfo; searched in logs from 14:40-15:10. I found 2 Therinus grandis under trunk of a pine log; forest was open w/ pine trees and lots of moss, and had been turned in the past. Continued uphill to a turnoff 8.8 km from town, at the point where I had found the Pseudoeurycea left night and drove uphill for 0.7 km to a flat area with lots of big fir trees and tons of logs. We searched for ~20 min in logs and found 25 Therinus grandis. Two logs had about 9 Therinus each and they seemed extremely abundant. There had been a lot of logging in this area. It was very cold and had started raining moderately. Drove to west of road on S side of Cerro Jastepac and started walking uphill through open pine forest w/ bunchgrasses at 16:00, searching in logs; I found 2 more T. grandis just above road. Went up through open, wet, rocky area and then followed a road to some fir forest that corresponded roughly to the type locality of Pseudoeurycea testaceus. Searched here and in nearby pine forest (17+6308'N, 100.14258'W [+9m], 3355m elev) but found nothing. GPS elevation readings seemed low compared to yesterday. Continued to search in logs on way down, stopping at 18:15. Drove ~10 more km E to the approximate type locality of Eleutherodactylus cruzes, where we searched along several small fast streams, to no avail. Habitat was pine-oak-fir forest and was very wet. Rain had stopped when we left west of road near Cerro Jastepac. I searched along road banks and found a big adult Pseudoeurycea thalcaudus at a spot up the road, 18.8 km E of Puerto del Alfo. It was emerging from a crack in a solid rock bank ~2m above the road. GPS here said 3006 m but changed to <3000m.
