La Trinidad, Mpio. Xilitla, San Luis Potosi, Mexico
Aug. 21 Spent ~1hr at Los Pozos in the morning. Drove to Ahuacatlan and searched
in the Cueva de la Iglesia (tunnel + cave just W of church). Was maybe
a little better than last time but found only an Eleutherodactylus ~5m
from back entrance. Cave had a ton of trash in it but more interior part
seemed OK. Drove to Petrovillas and spent ~1hr exploring cave there; found
another Eleutherodactylus (same species) near entrance. Went ~200m back
in cave to a huge chamber w/ flowing water + lots of bats. Seemed like
great conditions for C. rogenipes but saw none; they may be extirpated
there. Drove back to Xilitla and up a very steep road for ~16km
to La Trinidad, a community of ~100 people set up to receive tourists.
Spent 45 min searching under logs in [illegible] beautiful cloud forest
composed of Alnus guatemalensis, Pinus sp., cypress, and other trees with
lots of moss + tons of great horned frogs (too full of water for salamanders).
Found a small Grotalus, 1 Lepidaphyne + 1 Plesiodor under logs (not
collected b/c not on permit). Started searching along a rocky roadcut w/
lots of moss ~0.5km from town at 20:30; moderate to heavy rain started
to fall when we began searching + continued into the night. Found a
Pseudorycea "cephalus" somewhat resembling those from El Cielo, but
more reddish in color w/o yellow on limbs? Also found 5 Christoptitritus
that resemble either multidentatus or arboricus - long tail + somewhat webbed
feet. Got 3 enormous Pseudorycea bellii out of holes or burrows; all
were only partially out, and we dug quite a bit to get one. Also
saw several Lepidaphyne and a small juvenile Grotalus. Stopped
searching at 22:00 and camped.
