Journal
Aug. 19 La Encarnacion, PN Los Marmolos, Hidalgo, Mexico
Dean Scherible and I left OF around 12:00 and drove to
La Encarnacion in Parque Nacional Los Marmolos. After driving
through pine forest, arrived at a patch of nice oak forest with a
lot of moss + many rocks. Almost immediately, Dean got a big
female P. cephalica under a small piece of wood + 2 Christoperstitus
chondrostega under rocks. I found a male P. cephalica in a roadbank.
Searched for ~30 min. At night, started searching along roadbank at
21:00 after a brief afternoon rain (orographic). Found 8
P. cephalica on mostly roadbank along a ~100m stretch in the
forest. Continued on to a rock wall, where I found 1 more
P. cephalica (didn't collect, stopped seeing them after this), as
well as a Pseudurycea lelii emerging from the wall and a
dephis at its base. Further on, found 2 more Christopheritus
chondrostega on a roadbank. Turned back + stopped searching at
22:00 after activity appeared to have died down.
Aug. 20 El Lobo, Queretaro, Mexico
Searched in ~5 promobids on road from Agua Fria to Pajillas; found
nothing. Took a long, slow road from Pajillas to El Lobo via Agua
Zarca. Searched under logs at Parador Santa Marta, W of El
Lobo, from 16:40-18:40, found 1 Plestiodon + 2 Lepidophrys (not
collected). Habitat was pine-oak-madrone w/ poison oak + lots of
logs. Went into a cave ~100m N of road. Seemed great for salamanders.
Didn't saw more; found some incredible pre-Columbian pottery, but
car stuck in los Pajillitos, slept in [illegible] Xilitla.
