Aug. 1
Sierra de Alvarez, San Luis Potosi, Mexico
Left OF yesterday w/ Abby, Jorge, Tom + Susan and drove to San
Luis Potosi. This morning, we drove towards Rio Verde up into
the Sierra de Alvarez and went to El Valle de las Fantasias.
Spent a while looking for a cave for Chiropterotriton multidentatus,
which we never found, in oak woodland habitat. Tom found a
Plestiodon leucostictus under a rock during ~20 min of searching.
Drove on to Honey Farms and met Ely, who works for CET
(Centro de Estudios Geologicos) at Rancho El Cielo. Spent the
night at Hotel Posada Compostela; owner told us how he had
found a B. platyptylus and showed us photos.
Aug. 2
Alta Cirna and San Jose, Reserva de la Biosfera El Cielo, Jamulipas, Mex.
Started up toward Alta Cinas around 09:00, arriving in Alta
Cinas ~1hr later. A guide took us to a large cave on a side road
from the road to San Jose, which was ~1hr walk from Alta
Cirna. He said it had no name, but they call it "La Cueva del
Salto"; it was in a transition area from dry forest to cloud
forest. The cave had 2 main chambers with lots of stalactites and
cave formations, as well as pottery fragments. We spent ~30 min in
the cave and found 7 Pseudobranchus scanders (collected 5), all
on the walls or ceiling of the cave. All but 1 was an adult, and
they all appeared to be similar in size (large for Pseudobranchus,
maybe 10cm total length) and in color (black with lichen-like
whitish gray marks). Ely had found a small Chiropterotriton in
this cave, but we saw only 3 P. scanders. We had planned to
