July 14 Cerro Baul, Chiapas Mexico Spent all of the 12th writing in Tapachula for car to be fixed; was finally ready at 13:00 on the 13th. Drive to Acancayagua and searched for habitat at Finca da Esperanza, now called XX de Septiembre, 5 Km E of Acancayagua. Found no good banana plantations but did get a [illegible] leptoderis under a log along the road. Arrived late in Justita Antunez. This morning, Antonio, his daughter Natasha, and I drove to Cerro Baul, arriving in the town of Rafaelo Figueroa around 13:00. We started uphill through disturbed oak forest, continuing into a moister oak forest around 1500m elav. We cut our way through to an open area w/ lots of limestone and arrived at a small cave where Antonio had found a single specein of a black chalcotriton similar to C. niger. We entered the cave around 15:00 and found a juvenile of the black chalcotriton on rock at the cave entrance. We quickly found another 8 chalcotriton (collected 5), all of which were crawling on the cave walls & ceiling w/ ~5m of the entrance; both Antonio & I went further in but didn't find more. These animals appear lighter than the photos Dave seen of C. niger; they are very dark brown/grey with paler grey venters, and the biggest we got has light grey blotches on its back. Stayed in the cave for ~30 min, but active search time was more like 10 min. The recent heavy rain appears to have caused the salamanders to be
