Reserva Nectandra and Finca Ocosta (Garcia), Alajuela, Costa Rica (cont)
Fredi and I to Finca Ocosta, a property 8.7 km NE (by rd) of Garcia, about an hour's drive from Nectandra. Before we left, Fredi brought a dying Diplaziglossus bilobatus he had found on trail F. It had several puncture wounds on its neck and ventral might have been bitten by a snake? We drove to Finca Ocosta, arriving around 17:30, and searched under stones along a path through grassy areas with some trees as we walked to the forest.
We arrived at a forest patch at dusk. The forest was swampy, with poor drainage and large areas of standing water. Many of the trees had stiltlike roots and were extremely mossy; there was an understory of Clusia, a little Chusquea, ferns, and other plants. I quickly caught 2 Anolis tropidolepis active on vegetation and a Oligosaurus paduiferus. Fredi got 2 more C. paduiferus and a Discopus hylofermis. Mariguie and Luis caught a D. hylofermis and I saw one as well; their chirps formed a deafening chorus - they were extraordinarily abundant. Heard 2 other frog calls, one of which was probably a larger hybrid. Stopped searching around 21:15 and slowly walked back, searching along path. Found 3 Calthalyca pseudosaura in ponds formed by butts on trail, and saw many tadpoles. Got to car around 22:30, and arrived at Nectandra after midnight. It rained during the afternoon and early evening but pretty much stopped after about 19:00. It was much colder at Finca Ocosta than at Nectandra, because of the elevational difference.
