Reserva Nectandra, San Ramon, Alajuela, Costa Rica (cont.)
...named Roberto, on a property also owned by the Sennett's. The Ocelipina was apparently inside his house. Starting at 14:30,
we walked with Fredi to the northern fence line for a heavy
rain, at times lighter and at times very heavy, which didn't let
up all evening. We searched in a pasture just outside the
boundaries of the reserve, and saw lots of Craugastor brandfordi,
C. fitzingeri, and Rana aurantiacincta; heard unknown chk-chk-chk
frogs in trees. Jon found a Midway migrisetina in a log which
I accidentally injured with my potato rake. We walked into the
forest in la Olotan, the primary forest patch recently acquired by
Nectandra. The forest here is beautiful--huge trees with nice
streams, and seemed very intact. Found an Andrias oxylophus
in a stream. Waited until about 18:05 and started walking back w/
lights; saw only 2 Craugastor and a Rana before reaching
Nectandra proper. The heavy rain seemed to deter herp activity,
although we did here a lot of Craugastor-type frogs calling.
Started track at 19:35, and saw an Atrephidea nemumifer along
the trail, near where we had seen the Bottrops earlier in the
week. I got a Brumatentes cuentus near the visitors center. When
we got back, Jon attempted to milk the coral snake for its venom
to help w/ a project at UTA. The snake was difficult to handle
and bit Jon on the right thumb. We immediately went to the
San Ramon hospital, where they administered 4 tubes of
antivenin. Jon spent the night and was OK, although the first
hour was very scary and he was in incredible pain. Susan and
I stayed with him until 02:30, then slept at Hotel La Pasada.
