Sierra Morda Biosphere Reserve, Queretaro and San Luis Potosi, Mexico
May 31 Yesterday, I drove to the Sierra Morda of Queretaro and camped near Tinal de Amoles. Although it was very dry, this looked like great salamander habitat. I met Rick Beltzer, a Peace Corps volunteer, in Jalpan. We drove to the reservoir near town and found tons of metamorphosed Bufo. We swatted 4 smaller ones (2 species) and one adult, plus a Rana. Then drove to Parador Santa Marta, west of El Maderio on Hwy 180. The habitat here is pretty trashed and it was quite dry. We looked for ~30 min and found nothing, but did locate a cave where the samples of Chiasterotiton magnipes collected here probably came from. I dropped Rick off and drove to Potronillos, SLP, and took a small trail w/ remnant forest to a cave 200m S of town; opened ~5 brooklets along the way. The cave was spectacular - 2 entrances, lots of dripping water, rock formations. Continued back for ~150m before getting to a chamber filled w/ bats. Another arm of cave descends to a deep hole. Seems perfect for salamanders; found a Craugastor ~50m from shallow mouth of cave. Went to see the Cueva de la Iglesia in Almuscatan, but it was much drier and didn't seem very promising. The man who showed it to me told me about another "Sotaro" at La Barranca called Los Chorritos, which has flowing water. I spent the night in Xilitla.
