Mar 18 La Esperanza, along MX175, Oaxaca, Mexico In the morning, drove to La Esperanza and met with the new agent, who had been to California; he was quite pleasant and gave us permission to work. We walked into the forest above La Esperanza and tried to open a few bromeliads, but they were totally full of water. The forest here appears to be secondary and has few large trees. We searched in logs and leaf litter in cold, misty weather from 11:45-12:45 but found nothing. We drove about 15 km from La Esperanza towards San Pedro to a trail called Relampago or San Bernardo, which belongs to Santiago Comaltepec. After lunch, we searched from 13:45-15:45 in a very nice forest of big broaddled trees and tree ferns, with a fair number of bromeliads. We mostly opened bromeliads but also looked under logs and rocks. I got a Graugaster in a log and a Chiropterotriton "plurialis" in a bromeliad. Itzye got 2 more C. plurialis and a Thorius arboreus, all in bromeliads - the Thorius is the first dive seen of this species, and a great find. Walking back, I found a Xenodaurus under a large rock in the forest - also the first dive seen. We drove to "La Aldea" (C. adela type locality) and opened the bromeliads that remained from 16:00-18:00, finding 7 C. "plurialis", plus a Graugaster on the ground. Bromeliads held lots of water, but still had salamanders. A mist/light rain continued through late afternoon. Had planned to search along streams at night, but the truck got stuck where it was parked and almost fell off a ledge. We got it out with help from passers-by, but Pedro didn't want to risk parking again so we left. Hotel in Chiatan was full so we got a tiny, expensive ($MX600) room in Oaxaca.
