Corr San Felipe, Oaxaca, Mexico (cont)
March 17 ... dry, except inside the few logs we found (16.94409°N, 98.88315°W
E=7m], 2699m elev.). We gave up and drove back to Oaxaca,
where some teachers told us a way around the blockade. We drove
on to the cabin at La Cumbre de Santa Catarina Xitepeji, where
we spent the night. This morning, Pedro drove Malvina back to
Oaxaca to get a bus to DF. Alize, Cynthia and I were dropped off
at the Micordas Corral de Piedra, above the calvarias, and spent
about 2.5 hrs (10:30-13:00) searching under logs in pine forest. Most
of the trees were quite small (clearly secondary) and there was
a lot of wood debris - this forest is highly disturbed. Although
conditions were extremely dry, including under many logs, we had
some luck. I found 4 Ichirus (marigaluis?) under pieces
of bark, while Alize got 11 and Cynthia got 3 (only collected 1)
under logs (17.17281°N, 96.65296°W [E=7m], 3288m elev.). We
met Pedro and drove on to Santiago Comaltepe, where we had a long
discussion with the Presidente del Comisariado de Bienes Comunales. In
the end, after talking, leaving a book and articles, and making a
donation to the community ($1000 MX300), we were given permission
to collect a few specimens. Drove to San Pedro Yula and did the
same, without the donation and collecting restrictions. Drove to Cerro
Pelo and walked down from Mirador, searching along roadcut
with lights from 20:45-21:45. It had rained a little earlier
but was pretty dry, with very little mist. Cynthia got 1 Ichirus
awens under a rock, and I got 1 I. awrens and another
Ichirus, both under small rocks. Spent the night in the
municipalidad in San Pedro Yulo.
